Senior Mechanical Engineer | Platinum Mining Project | Johannesburg / Zimbabwe

A leading international mining company is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the project team delivering a major platinum mining project currently in the execution phase in Zimbabwe.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a senior mechanical engineering professional with extensive mining, EPCM and mineral processing experience to play a key technical leadership role across engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and operational readiness of a large-scale concentrator plant.

Based in Bryanston, Johannesburg, the role requires regular travel to the project site in Zimbabwe, with extended site-based assignments during commissioning and plant start-up.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Project Manager: Capital Projects, you will act as the mechanical discipline authority, providing technical leadership and governance throughout the project lifecycle.

You will ensure that all mechanical equipment and systems are engineered, procured, installed, commissioned and handed over safely, efficiently and in accordance with engineering standards, project specifications and operational requirements.

The role is based in Bryanston, Johannesburg, with frequent travel and extended periods on site in Zimbabwe during key construction and commissioning phases. The role is an initial 12 month Fixed-Term Contract with a strong possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Engineering Leadership

• Lead the mechanical engineering discipline across all project phases.

• Review and approve mechanical engineering deliverables, specifications and calculations.

• Provide technical leadership for process plant layouts, equipment selection and mechanical system design.

• Lead multidisciplinary design reviews and value engineering initiatives.

• Mentor and develop junior mechanical engineers.

Engineering & EPCM Support

• Ensure engineering compliance with project standards and statutory requirements.

• Manage technical risks and engineering interfaces.

• Participate in HAZOPs, design reviews and management of change processes.

• Support engineering consultants and multidisciplinary project teams.

Procurement & Vendor Management

• Lead technical bid evaluations and supplier assessments.

• Review technical specifications and procurement documentation.

• Participate in vendor clarification meetings.

• Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), inspections and vendor quality reviews.

Construction Support

• Provide senior technical support during construction.

• Resolve complex site engineering challenges.

• Conduct engineering audits and quality inspections.

• Support contractor performance and installation compliance.

Commissioning & Operational Readiness

• Lead mechanical commissioning activities from C1 to C5.

• Oversee mechanical completion, system testing and handover.

• Support integrated commissioning with process, electrical and instrumentation teams.

• Provide technical support during plant start-up and production ramp-up.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

• Champion a strong safety culture across all project phases.

• Ensure compliance with statutory, company and project engineering standards.

• Participate in incident investigations and continuous improvement initiatives.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

• Professional registration with ECSA (PrEng) or eligibility to register will be highly advantageous.

• Valid passport with the ability to travel internationally.

Experience

• 12–15 years' mechanical engineering experience within mining, mineral processing or heavy industrial projects.

• Significant EPCM project delivery experience.

• Proven experience on large-scale greenfield and brownfield mining projects.

• Extensive experience in mechanical equipment design, installation, commissioning and operational readiness.

• Strong contractor and vendor management experience.

• Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.

• Platinum processing plant experience will be highly advantageous.
