Our client, a leading mining house operating a large-scale open pit mining operation in the Northern Cape, is seeking an exceptional Senior General Manager to provide strategic leadership and operational direction across the mine.

This executive leadership role carries full accountability for the overall performance, sustainability, profitability, safety, and regulatory compliance of the operation. The successful candidate will drive business strategy, operational excellence, stakeholder engagement, and long-term value creation while fostering a high-performance, values-driven culture.

The Opportunity

Reporting to Executive Leadership, the Senior General Manager will be responsible for the overall leadership of the operation, ensuring the successful execution of business objectives relating to:

  • Safety and SHERQ performance

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Business Management

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership across all operational and support functions.

  • Translate corporate strategy into executable operational plans.

  • Drive organisational performance, business optimisation, and sustainable growth.

  • Lead change management and transformation initiatives.

  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Operational Excellence

  • Lead and optimise all mining activities to achieve production, safety, and cost objectives.

  • Drive operational efficiency, productivity improvements, and asset utilisation.

  • Ensure effective mine planning and execution.

  • Promote operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Oversee business continuity and operational risk management programmes.

SHERQ, Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable mining legislation and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintain the highest standards of safety, health, environment, risk, and quality management.

  • Act as the legally appointed responsible person in accordance with MHSA requirements.

  • Ensure effective governance and compliance with POPIA requirements as Delegated Information Officer.

  • Lead crisis management, incident response, and business resilience initiatives.

Financial & Commercial Management

  • Lead financial planning, capital allocation, and budget management.

  • Manage significant operational and capital expenditure budgets.

  • Drive profitability, cost optimisation, and shareholder value creation.

  • Ensure responsible financial stewardship and commercial decision-making.

People & Stakeholder Leadership

  • Lead and develop multidisciplinary operational and technical teams.

  • Drive workforce planning, succession planning, and talent development.

  • Foster a high-performance and inclusive organisational culture.

  • Build and maintain productive relationships with:

    • Organised labour

    • Government and regulatory bodies

    • Communities and traditional authorities

    • Industry associations

    • Business partners and contractors

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • BTech or Bachelor's Degree(NQF Level 7) in:

    • Mining Engineering

    • Engineering

    • Metallurgy

    • Geology

    • Or equivalent professional qualification

  • Postgraduate qualification advantageous:

    • MBA

    • MBL

    • ARM Senior Management Programme

    • Executive Leadership Qualification

Legal Certifications

  • Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency (MMCC) and/or

  • Government Certificate of Competency (GCC)

Experience

  • Minimum 15 years' mining industry experience.

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a senior leadership or executive management role.

  • Extensive experience within large-scale open pit mining operations.

  • Proven track record leading multidisciplinary mining teams.

  • Demonstrated success in:

    • Strategy execution

    • Business optimisation

    • Operational performance management

    • Financial leadership

    • Organisational transformation

  • Experience managing substantial operational and capital budgets.

  • Proven stakeholder engagement experience across organised labour, communities, regulators, and industry bodies.

Other Requirements

  • Medically fit and able to meet minemedical standards.

  • Valid Code EB Driver's Licence.

  • Eligible for legal appointment in terms of MHSA requirements.

  • Ability to act as Delegated Information Officer in accordance with POPIA requirements.
